Brooklyn Bridge Collision: Sailboat Accident Leaves Two Dead, Dozens Hurt

A tragic accident struck the New York City waterfront Saturday night when a Mexican Navy sailboat carrying 277 people slammed into the Brooklyn Bridge. The crash occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m., killing two individuals and injuring at least 19 others. The vessel’s captain reportedly lost mechanical power while maneuvering, causing the ship to drift uncontrollably. Among the injured, four suffered serious trauma, while others endured less critical wounds. Numerous bystanders captured dramatic footage showing the sailboat’s tall, illuminated masts striking the underside of the bridge. Several crew members were seen clinging to the rigging post-collision. Fortunately, no one fell into the East River, and emergency services were quick to secure the area and aid those onboard.

City officials noted that the bridge was temporarily closed to allow emergency personnel to assess the damage. However, after a preliminary inspection, Mayor Adams announced the bridge had sustained no structural harm and was deemed safe for traffic shortly after midnight. Preliminary findings suggest a mechanical failure led to the crash, though more thorough analyses are expected. Investigators will also examine crew conduct, the ship's technical condition, and its safety protocols leading up to the event.

The sailors injured in the collision were harmed when the ship’s mast struck the bridge, highlighting the immense force of the impact.
