Elon Musk Ends Government Role Amid Disputes Over Trump’s Budget Plan

Elon Musk has ended his temporary role within the Trump administration, citing the expiration of his term and growing dissatisfaction with the president’s fiscal policies. His announcement was made through a post on X, Musk's own social media platform, where he thanked President Trump for the opportunity to contribute to the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE. Musk's departure follows mounting criticism of Trump’s latest budget bill.

Musk was appointed as a “special government employee,” which allowed him to work for the federal government for up to 130 days annually. As that limit approached in late May, his exit was technically expected. However, it gained attention because it came immediately after he condemned Trump’s “big, beautiful” budget proposal, which includes sweeping tax cuts and an increase in military spending.

In a CBS interview, Musk voiced concern that the budget would dangerously expand the national deficit and undermine DOGE’s objectives. He argued that fiscal responsibility was being ignored. “A bill can be big, or it can be beautiful,” he said. “I’m not convinced it can be both.” His remarks highlighted a sharp policy rift between him and the administration he briefly served.

During his time leading DOGE, Musk made aggressive efforts to shrink the size of the federal workforce. He initially aimed to slash $2 trillion from the government’s budget, though that target was repeatedly adjusted—eventually settling at a $150 billion reduction. Under his leadership, an estimated 260,000 federal jobs were eliminated or relinquished through buyouts.

However, the mass terminations brought legal and administrative complications. Some of the firings were overturned by federal judges who ruled that the dismissals violated due process. In a few instances, essential personnel, including those involved in national security, were mistakenly let go. These operational blunders contributed to skepticism surrounding DOGE’s practices.

Musk’s controversial role in government also led to internal tension. Sources reported clashes between him and senior Trump administration officials. Musk later complained that DOGE became a scapegoat for unrelated failures in Washington. “We were blamed for everything,” he told the Washington Post before a SpaceX launch, reflecting his growing frustration with the political atmosphere.

Outside of government, Musk’s businesses began to feel the strain. Tesla experienced a dip in sales, and SpaceX faced critical questions about his political involvement. Many analysts speculated that his high-profile participation in the Trump administration may have negatively impacted public perception of his companies and distracted from key corporate operations.

By late April, Musk announced he would step away from government service to refocus on running his companies. Despite his departure, he insisted DOGE’s mission to cut waste and improve efficiency should continue. He maintained that the department could thrive without him, becoming a long-term feature of federal reform.
