Manhunt After Deadly Campus Shooting Shakes Brown University and Providence

Late Saturday, Providence was placed on heightened alert after a deadly shooting at Brown University left the city reeling. Police confirmed that two students were killed, eight others critically wounded, and another person injured by bullet fragments during the attack.

The shooting occurred inside Brown’s Barus & Holley engineering building while exams were underway, intensifying fear across the Ivy League campus. Streets surrounding the area were sealed off for hours, crowded with emergency vehicles and heavily armed law enforcement officers.

Mayor Brett Smiley told reporters that the suspect remained at large several hours after the incident, urging the public to remain vigilant. Deputy Police Chief Timothy O’Hara confirmed that authorities had not yet identified the individual responsible for the violence.

Officials described the suspect as a male dressed in black, possibly wearing a mask, and announced plans to release video footage to aid the investigation. Shell casings were recovered at the scene, though police declined to provide further forensic details.

As news of the shooting spread rapidly, Brown University instructed students to shelter in place across campus. President Christina Paxson said it was a day the institution hoped would never come, confirming that nearly all victims were students.

Students described hours of fear and uncertainty as alerts circulated. One student, Chiang-Heng Chien, told local television he hid under a desk with classmates for nearly two hours after receiving warnings of an active shooter nearby.

The search for the suspect proved challenging because downtown Providence was crowded with holiday shoppers and concertgoers. Local and federal law enforcement agencies joined the effort, while venues across the city reportedly increased security measures.

Rhode Island Governor Daniel McKee vowed justice, promising authorities would find the person responsible for causing such suffering. President Donald Trump, briefed at the White House, called the incident terrible and urged prayers for the victims.

The tragedy again highlighted the frequency of mass shootings in the United States, where gun laws remain comparatively permissive. According to the Gun Violence Archive, hundreds of mass shootings have occurred nationwide this year, including multiple attacks at schools.
